The Philosophy of Hi/stories of Wilhelm Schapp

Abstract

This open access monograph introduces in English Wilhelm Schapp's philosophy of hi/stories. It addresses such questions as: What does it mean that human beings can articulate their experience narratively? In what sense can they attribute value to the relations between themselves and the world? In what sense can there be no perception of the world, not even of a tiny cup of coffee, without a narrative context? This text offers a combination of historical and systematic approaches. It reconstructs the development of Schapp's thought (Schapp having studied with Rickert, Dilthey, and Husserl) and shows its relevance for contemporary discussions in the fields of phenomenology, hermeneutics, philosophy of mind and perception, philosophy of narrative, value theory, and social ontology. It appeals to researchers and students working in these areas.
